Homemade Peeps
Celebrate Easter with a fun and festive homemade Peeps recipe that’s perfect for spring baking and family traditions. These DIY marshmallow treats are easy to make, customizable, and a delicious alternative to store-bought Easter candy.

Why didn’t my marshmallows set properly?
This usually happens if the sugar syrup didn’t reach the correct temperature (around 240°F / soft-ball stage) or if the mixture wasn’t whipped long enough. Make sure to use a candy thermometer and whip until thick and fluffy.
Why are my Peeps too sticky?
Homemade marshmallows are naturally sticky. Coat them generously in colored sugar or a cornstarch-powdered sugar mix to make them easier to handle.
Can I make Peeps without gelatin?
Yes, but you’ll need a substitute like agar-agar. Keep in mind the texture will be slightly firmer and less fluffy than traditional marshmallow Peeps.
How do I get the classic Peeps shape?
Use a piping bag with a round tip and pipe chick or bunny shapes onto parchment paper. It takes a little practice, but simple shapes work best.

How long do homemade Peeps last?
They typically last about 3–5 days in an airtight container at room temperature. Avoid refrigerating, as moisture can affect texture.
What sugar to use for Peeps?
Colored sanding sugar for the coating gives Peeps their signature sparkly look and helps reduce stickiness. You can buy pre-colored sugar or tint it yourself.

Homemade Peeps
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tbsp. Gelatin
- 1 1/2 cups Cold Water divided
- 1 1/2 cups Granulated Cane Sugar
- 1 tbsp. Honey
- 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
- 1/4 tsp. Salt
- 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
- Colored Sanding Sugar for coating
Instructions
- Lightly butter and dust a 9×13″ baking pan with powdered sugar.
- In a small bowl, mix the gelatin and 1/2 cup cold water together. Set aside for 10 minutes to thicken up.
- Place the remaining 1 cup of water, sugar, and honey in a deep saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
- Use a candy thermometer to know when the sugar has reached 240F, then carefully remove and pour into your stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment.
- Add the gelatin mixture. Beat on LOW speed for 2 minutes, then increased speed to HIGH for 8-10 minutes, until doubled in volume and super fluffy. Add the vanilla and salt half way through whipping.
- Pour into the prepared pan and smooth out with a spatula. Set aside uncovered for 2-3 hours, until set.
- Use a mini bunny cookie cutter to make individual bunny shapes. It’s okay if it’s sticky as that’ll help the sanding sugar to stick. If the powdered sugar has made the bottoms non tacky, just pat with a little water.
