After years of pouring out the excess liquid in my yogurt down the sink, I finally decided to do some research on it. In the end, I found out that the liquid in yogurt is actually a REALLY good thing! Crazy, right?!
The liquid on top of yogurt is actually known as Whey. Typically, whey is more likely to be found in non-Greek yogurts. This liquid (whey) from your yogurt should have a cloudy, yellow-ish appearance. Not only does the whey bring more flavor to the yogurt, but it also adds an extra boost of nutrients. Although whey is mostly water, it does contain bits of protein, calcium, and potassium. It is jam packed with probiotics that can be great for gut health and daily energy.
How do you properly mix the whey back into the yogurt? It’s simple! Take a spoon and mix it all together or give it a good shake before taking the lid off. Easy as pie!
