What is Hong Kong Toast?

Hong Kong Style French toast is made of fluffy milk bread that is stuffed traditionally with peanut butter, coated in an egg mixture, then fried in oil so all sides are crispy.

Can you Make Ahead French Toast in Advance?

Yes, French toast can be made in advance although it is better cooked right before serving. To reheat, place in oven covered by foil at 350F for 10-12 minutes, optionally removing the cover for a few minutes to crisper up with melted butter brushed on top.

Ingredients

Servings: 6-8

  • Equipment: Cosori Turboblaze Air Fryer
  • 1 loaf Challah or Brioche Bread
  • 15 oz. Ricotta Cheese, about 1 ½ cups
  • Zest of 1-2 Lemons
  • ¼ cup Honey
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 ½ cups Whole Milk
  • 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • ¼ cup Sugar, for the bruleed tops
  • ¼ cup Melted Butter
  • Fresh Whipped Cream, for serving
  • Fresh Raspberries, for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Slice the brioche bread into 3-4” large pieces. Create a pocket-like slit in the centers of each slice for the filling. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and vanilla together. Dredge the brioche bread pieces in the mixture to soak for 10-20 seconds. Set aside.
  3. In a blender or food processor, combine the ricotta, lemon zest, and honey. Add a pinch of salt to taste (optional). Pulse until smooth.
  4. Fill each soaked brioche slice with the ricotta filling, then place in your air fryer basket. You may need to work in small batches of 2-3 pieces at a time.
  5. Brush or spoon on the melted butter.
  6. Bake at 400F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until deeply golden.
  7. In the last half of baking, spoon on the sugar for the bruleed topping, or use a kitchen torch afterwards.
  8. Enjoy warm with the freshly whipped cream and raspberries!
