Homemade Whipped Honey Butter

Give the gift of pure, fluffy indulgence with homemade whipped honey butter—an easy DIY Christmas treat that feels luxurious without the fuss. It’s irresistibly delicious on everything from morning toast to dinner rolls like my brown butter sage milk buns, and it elevates just about anything it touches.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • honey
  • unsalted butter
  • flaky sea salt

How to Store Honey Butter:

Homemade honey butter is easy to store and keeps well thanks to the natural preservatives in both honey and butter. Here’s how to store it safely:

Short-term:

  • Keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2–3 weeks.
  • The texture will firm up when chilled; let it sit at room temp for a few minutes before spreading.

Long-term:

  • For longer storage, freeze it for up to 3 months.
  • You can freeze it in small ramekins or shape it into a log, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer-safe bag.

General tips:

If it develops an off smell, separation, or discoloration, discard it. Always use clean utensils when scooping to prevent contamination.

Honey butter is wildly versatile—sweet, creamy, and just a little indulgent—so it pairs beautifully with both baked goods and savory dishes. Here are some delicious ways to enjoy it:

Ingredients

  • Honey
  • Unsalted Butter softened
  • Flaky Sea Salt

Instructions

  • You will be using 50/50 ratio for the honey and butter. So, half honey and half butter. If you prefer it less sweet, you can work on a ratio of 1/2 cup unsalted butter and 1/3 cup honey.
  • In a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the honey and butter. Beat on LOW speed until well-combined, then increase speed to HIGH to beat for 6-8 minutes, until light and fluffy. Add flaky sea salt to taste.
  • Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a 1/2″ star tip to pipe into individual jars. Seal tightly with the lids.
  • Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. You can leave out on the counter away from direct heat and sunlight overnight for softened honey butter the next day!

    1. Hi Ashley! I left the recipe pretty open-ended here since you can make as much or as little as needed depending on the size jars you buy! But in general, the butter will whip to be almost doubled in volume!

Ok… this is AMAZING. Not only is it so simple, it is so freaking good. I love to make sourdough and I don’t know if I’ll ever beat the combo with anything ever again. 100/10 recommend. <3

  2. Is there a good way to have it keep longer than two weeks— looking to make ahead and then gift give?

  3. Does it have to go directly in the fridge after it’s made or can it sit out a few days before gifting? I am trying to figure out how far ahead I can make it before gifting it. Also wondering if I do refrigerate it will it be ok for it to be out a while when I take it to gift to people.

    1. Hi Faith! I would recommend keeping it in the fridge prior to gifting, but it will safely last 2-3 days out at room temperature!
