Sourdough Corndogs
Craving a healthier twist on a classic fair food? These sourdough corndogs are crispy, tangy, and irresistibly delicious with their cornbread breading—perfect for your next snack or weekend cookout!

Ingredients you’ll need:
- beef hotdogs
- yellow cornmeal
- flour
- sugar
- baking powder
- salt
- egg
- sourdough discard
- honey
- melted butter
- whole milk, or buttermilk
- frying oil

How to store and reheat corndogs?
To store corndogs, let them cool completely and then wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or foil, or place them in an airtight container. Keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
For reheating, you can either:
- Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C), place the corndogs on a baking sheet, and heat for 10-12 minutes or until crispy and heated through.
- Air Fryer: Set the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and heat the corndogs for about 5-7 minutes.
- Microwave: Though not ideal for crispiness, you can microwave them on a plate for 30-45 seconds, but they may lose some crunch.
Reheating in the oven or air fryer will give you the closest texture to freshly made!

Sourdough Corndogs
Ingredients
- 6 beef hotdogs
- 1 cup fine yellow cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 2 tbsp. granulated cane sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 cup whole milk or buttermilk
- 1 egg beaten
- 1/3 cup sourdough discard
- 1 tbsp. honey
- 1 tbsp. melted butter
- ketchup for serving
Instructions
- Add neutral frying oil to a large saucepan over medium high heat so it’s 4-5″ deep. Heat up until 350F, or the oil is glistening.
- Pat dry the hot dogs. Insert a large skewer in each hotdog, cutting off excess wood skewer with scissors as needed. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the beaten egg, sourdough discard, honey, melted butter, and milk. Mix until a smooth batter.
- Transfer the batter to a large rimmed glass.
- Dip each hot dog in the batter to fully coat. Immediately add to the oil and fry until deeply golden brown.
- TIP: Keep hold of the wooden skewer for 5-10 seconds, gently turning the corndog to help the batter fry more evenly. Then, you can let go to fry until deeply golden.
- Transfer the corndogs to a paper towel lined plate.
- Enjoy warm with ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce!
